Grief and gratitude.

My husband's stepdad, Gordon, was known for his light-hearted, often-repeated tales, always shared with a smile. Last Thanksgiving, I brought a deck of Gratitude Cards to the table, and it transformed the dinner into something unexpectedly meaningful.

Gordon’s stories that day weren’t just the usual familiar ones—we heard deeply personal reflections we’d never known before. We always knew Gordon as the family storyteller, but that night, his stories revealed a deeper layer of wisdom and heart.

In February, we lost Gordon suddenly.

In our grief, we found ourselves returning to that Thanksgiving conversation. Gordon's heartfelt responses became a precious gift – a snapshot of his heart, his values, and the things that truly mattered to him.

Those few hours of sharing had given us Gordon's parting gift – the essence of who he was, preserved in our memories.

This experience taught me that practicing gratitude is more than a feel-good exercise. It's a way of preserving the essence of our relationships and capturing the fleeting moments that define our connections.

As we approach another season of togetherness, I encourage you to create opportunities for expressing what truly matters. You never know when these moments might become the memories you cherish most.

With gratitude for life's unexpected lessons,
